These national statistics on agriculture in the English regions produced by Defra were released on 7th May 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
‘Agriculture in the United Kingdom 2007’, a statistical compendium that provides information on the economic condition of the agricultural industry in the United Kingdom, was published on 27th March 2008. This compendium provided the key statistics on agriculture at a regional level in England for the first time.
The statistical release of 7th May contains information for each of the nine Government Office (NUTS 1) regions in England, including charts showing comparisons between regions for a number of major agricultural statistics. Separate tables for each region show the main aspects of the industry, a production and income account and a note explaining the methodology used in constructing regional accounts.
In brief, data for England are compiled within the production and income account for the United Kingdom and the regional figures from these and regional data on crop areas, livestock counts and labour collected in the June survey of agricultural and horticultural holdings. It is assumed that, across regions, revenue and costs are proportional to crop areas, livestock counts and labour. These data are provisional and subject to statistical error.
