An article disucssing the labour market across the UK in the current recession was released on the 18th November 2009. This article looks at labour market performance since April 2008 using ONS and DWP data. Chapter 13 of the report looks at the South East Labour Market.
On the 14th May 2009 ONS published an article discussing the impact of the recession on the labour market, the report looks at the impact nationally, regionally, by gender and by age group. Some of the key finding are that; the impact has been most severe in the West Midlands, women are faring better then men, unemployment rates for young people have increased at a faster rate than unemployment rates for older people.
The Labour Force Survey Historic Quarterly Supplement provide access to time series data from the various labour market sources used in First Releases. From here time series data back to 1992 (the earliest available from the quarterly Labour Force Survey) can be obtained in either seasonally adjusted or non-seasonally adjusted form.
Labour market data on Regional Snapshot includes information about employment and unemployment and how people work, together with summary details of earnings from ASHE.
Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) is conducted in April each year and includes details for local authority areas, males and females (full- and part-time) by broad industry groups. Results are released for both workplace and residence based activity. Data relating to April 2009 was released on 12 November 2009.
Local labour market statistical indicators
Statistics relating to the employment, unemployment and benefit dependency of the resident population of an area provide indicators of labour supply. These data are mainly from the annual Labour Force Survey and the Annual Population Survey.
Neighbourhood Statistics have launched a new series of products called Painting a Picture of Place. The first topic profile to be released is Worklessness which contains important information. An article on worklessness was also published in the November 2009 issue of ELMR.
Statistics relating to jobs and vacancies at workplaces in the area provide statistics of labour demand.
Unemployment at local authority district level is measured using model based unemployment estimates which use the Annual Population Survey and Claimant Count, a time series of data is available.

A wide range of information relating to the labour market is available from the monthly publication - Economics and Labour Market Review (ELMR). Employment of foreign workers. Estimates of migrant workers in the UK from the Labour Force Survey by country of birth for selected countries are released quarterly.
ONS has developed new annual local area datasets called the Annual Population Survey (APS) household datasets. They allow production of family and household labour market statistics at local areas and for small sub-groups of the population across the UK.
Nomis is the National on-line manpower information system and provides access to a wide range of labour market and skills data covering national, regional and local level information.
Education and skills
Education and training data on Regional Snapshot includes examination achievement, pupil numbers, absences, students in higher education and population of working age by highest qualification. Some information is available for Local Education Authorities and other analyses may only be available at regional level.
Releases from Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) are listed below. Together these departments were formerly Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and responsible for a wide range of education and skills information
Performance tables relating to individual schools in a region are available from the DCSF website.
Information relating to work-based learning of young people is published annually by DCSF.
A report on the projected participation rates for post-compulsory education in the South East has been prepared and is available from the Learning and Skills Council website. An executive summary is also available:
ONS produced a report on geographical variations in worklessness on the 3 December 2009. The report use a number of data sources (including unemployment, claimant count and workless households) to show the pattern of worklessness across the England and Wales.
A tool showing commuting patterns between local authorities was released on the 18 March 2010. The tool uses data from the Annual Population Survey to show labour market linkages between local authorities. This forms part of ONS's suite of releases supporting Local Economic Assessments and is designed to help in the understanding of functional economic areas.
