Population, migration and vital statistics. A selection of datasets is available on the Regional Snapshot webpage which provides access to a wide range of information about the demographic make up of regions, local authorities and local authority districts of the UK. Population is presented by broad age bands, also international and internal migration and vital events (birth and deaths) statistics.
Mid-year Population Estimates: by sex and quinary age groups for local authority districts in the United Kingdom are just one of the options available (Table 9) from the latest population estimates, current datasets section of the virtual bookshelf of the ONS website. Data for a range of time periods are also available from the same location 2006 Estimates 2005 Estimates.
Estimates for mid-2007 were released on 21 August 2008.
Population Trends is a quarterly publication which contains commentary on the latest findings, topical articles on relevant subjects such as one parent families, cohabitation, fertility differences, together with regularly updated statistical tables on: conceptions, births, marriages, divorces, migration, population estimates and projections, etc. The Summer 2008 issue (PT132) contains an article looking at the ageing population and concentrating on the very old.
The December 2007 issue of Population Trends included the annual article from the National Statistician on The Changing Demographic Picture of the United Kingdom.
Sub-national population projections are released every second year. The latest estimates were published on 12 June 2008 and are based on mid-2006 population estimates. This release provides projections by sex and quinary age bands for LAs, counties and regions, together with Primary Care Organisations (PCOs) and Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs). Summaries of natural change are also included.
Internal migration estimates for local authorities between mid-2006 and mid-2007 and a report on international migration provides latest estimates as well as an explanation of the sources were also released on 21 August.
Key Population and Vital Statistics (P&VS) annual report provides data on resident population, births, maternities, deaths, mortality and migration for local administrative areas and health areas throughout the United Kingdom, together with explanatory material and illustrative maps.

Ethnicity and Indentity In 2001 there were 4.6 million people from a variety of non-white backgrounds that are not evenly distributed acros the country.
Gender A revised version was issued on 26 September 2008. This highlights that there are still some notable differences in the key areas of health, educational achievment and the labour market.
Older people make up an increasing proportion of our population. Many over the age of 50 lead active and healthy lives, however, for some there may be barriers - financial, health, lack of transport - which prevent them from participating in a wide variety of activities.
Religion In 2001, 8.6 million people in Great Britain said they had no religion; Christianity is still the main religion with 41 milion people.
Social Inequalities looks at six key areas - education, work, income, living standards, health and participation, looking at the 'advantaged' and 'disadvantaged' and explores relative differences.
Focus on Families looks at family types and explores similarities and differences between them. It also examines the relationship between families and health, unpaid care and education.
Income and lifestyles data available covering personal and household income and expenditure, benefits and tourism.

The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 (IMD 2007) combines a number of indicators, chosen to cover a range of economic, social and housing issues, into a single deprivation score for each small area, each with an average population of 1,500, in England. This allows each area to be ranked relative to one another according to their level of deprivation. As with the 2004 Indices, the Indices of Deprivation 2007 have been produced at Lower Super Output Area level (LSOAs), of which there are 32,482 in the country. Within the South East there are 5,319 LSOAs.
