Indices of Deprivation 2007
The Indices of Deprivation 2007 have been released by Communities and Local Government (CLG). They are available both on the CLG website and the Neighbourhood Statistics website. The data cover England only.
Communities and Local Government commissioned the Social Disadvantage Research Centre (SDRC) at the Department of Social Policy and Social Work at the University of Oxford to update the Indices of Deprivation 2004 (ID 2004) for England. The new Indices of Deprivation 2007 have been produced following an extensive public consultation and an independent academic peer review.
The new Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 (IMD 2007) is a Lower layer Super Output Area (LSOA) level measure of multiple deprivation, and is made up of seven LSOA level domain indices. There are also two supplementary indices (Income Deprivation Affecting Children and Income Deprivation Affecting Older People).
Summary measures of the IMD 2007 are presented for local authority districts and county councils. The LSOA level Domain Indices and IMD 2007, together with the local authority district and county summaries, are referred to as the Indices of Deprivation 2007 (ID 2007).
The ID 2007 are based on the approach, structure and methodology used to create the previous ID 2004, but use more up-to-date data (generally relating to 2005). Most change is therefore likely to reflect real relative change between the ID 2007 and ID 2004. However, some change will be occasioned by the substitution of some new indicators in the IMD 2007, especially in the Income Deprivation domain.
The new IMD 2007 contains seven domains which relate to income deprivation, employment deprivation, health deprivation and disability, education skills and training deprivation, barriers to houosing and sefvices, living environment deprivation, and crime.
A summary report providing more details on the components of the ID 2007 is available here. The data in the ID 2007 may be subject to final quality assurance. Communities and Local Government plan to release a full report about the ID 2007 and finalise quality assurance by the Spring of 2008.
