New 2006 mid-year population estimates and revised estimates for 2002 to 2005

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) have released 2006 mid-year population estimates, and revised estimates for 2002 to 2005. These estimates incorporate the improved methods for estimating international migration, announced by ONS on 24 April 2007.

The release of the latest population statistics comes on the back of a substantial and long term programme of work led by ONS to improve the population statistics it produces. The improved methods being implemented in 2007 address: the distribution of international in-migrants to regional and local authority level; the distribution of international out-migrants to local authority level; and the basis for making assumptions about the proportion of people who will not realise their original intentions at the time of travel, in terms of their expected length of stay in the destination country.
