New health expectancy data for small areas

Experimental figures published for the first time by the Office for National Statistics today show wide geographic variations between wards in England and Wales in the length of time people can expect to live without disability.

Forty-two per cent of wards in the South East, 29 per cent in the East of England and 26 per cent in the South West were in the top fifth of wards with the highest disability-free life expectancy at birth. In contrast, only 4 per cent of wards in the North East, 3 per cent in Wales and 10 per cent in the North West were in the top quintile of wards.

The regional pattern was reversed for the fifth of wards with the lowest disability-free life expectancy values. While 55 per cent of wards in the North East, 45 per cent in Wales and 37 per cent in the North West were in the bottom quintile, less than 5 per cent of wards in the South East, the East of England and the South West were in the lowest group.
