Regional Energy Consumption Statistics

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) has recently expanded its suite of regional and local authority based energy consumption data.

The data is produced to emphasise the importance of local and regional decision-making for energy policy in delivering a number of national energy policy objectives; this was identified in the 2003 Energy White Paper. BERR is committed to collecting and making available data on the pattern of energy use in local areas, enabling local authorities and regional bodies to effectively target energy efficiency related activity.

All available datasets for 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 data can be obtained via specific links or viewed in one place by using the Combined Regional Front-end files accessible in the section entitled 'Combined Regional Front-end'.

BERR have released the following new datasets:

Articles on these datasets can be found in the December 2007 edition of Energy Trends which is available here.

Future work

In addition to the work produced above BERR also plans to release the following:

  • 2006 electricity and gas estimates at middle layer super output area (MSOA) for all local authority areas in Great Britain (Spring 2008)
  • 2005 high level indicators of energy use at regional and local authority level (Spring 2008)
  • Updated local authority maps of electricity, gas and total energy consumption (Summer 2008).
