Inter-regional migration movements within the UK during the year to September 2007

The latest national statistics on inter-regional migration movements within the UK.

Internal migration estimates for the UK showing region of origin and region of destination are broken-down by country - England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales - and by government office regions within England. Tables covering a rolling year are released quarterly.

Because there is no single system to record population movements within the UK, internal migration estimates must be derived from proxy sources. These estimates use the National Health Service Central Register (NHSCR) as the administrative data source.

The NHSCR receives notification when a patient in England and Wales transfers to a new NHS doctor within a different health authority boundary. Weekly counts of these re-registrations are used by ONS as proxy indicators for movements around the UK. Estimates derived from the NHSCR are considered to give the most comprehensive coverage of the population and represent the most reliable indicator of internal migration within the UK. However, they are only based on the broad geographic level of the former health authorities.

A general note on the methods used to generate internal migration estimates is available here.
