Small area population estimates, 2006

This release provides resident population estimates for Lower and Middle Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs and MSOAs) for mid-2006 with new breakdowns by age band and gender.

The methodology used to produce these estimates differs to the method used to produce the local authority mid-year estimates, and is subject to further development. In view of this ongoing work, these LSOA and MSOA estimates are published as 'experimental statistics', and are under evaluation. Despite methodological differences, these estimates are consistent with local authority mid-year estimates as they have been constrained by the local authority totals for the particular year to which they apply.

There has been an update to the Resident Population Estimates by Broad Age Band dataset, providing data down to LSOA level. These estimates provide age breakdowns of 0-15, 16-29, 30-44, 45-64/59, 65/60 and over, for all people and also those age groupings for males and females separately. A total of the 'working age' population is also included.

The MSOA level data in the Resident Population Estimates, Mid 2006, has been broken down for All Persons, Males and Females. This dataset provides more detail in terms of age groupings (providing data by quinary age groupings, e.g. 0-4, 5-9 etc.), but less geographical detail, with the information going down to MSOA level only.
