South East Labour Market Update, December 2008
This is a summary of the latest official employment and unemployment figures for the South East.
The key headlines are:
- The South East accounted for more than one quarter of the total fall in employment in the UK in the three months to October, yet it represents only just over one eighth of the total UK workforce.
- However, there are still 50,000 more people in employment in the South East than at the same time last year.
- The majority of the fall in employment was accounted for by a drop in women's employment.
- Unemployment in the South East increased by 6,000 in the three months to October, which was one of the smallest increases of any region.
- There were 96,000 people claiming Job Seekers' Allowance in the South East in November.
