West Sussex Economy Review - June 2008
This review from SEEDA's Research & Economics Team presents an in depth analysis of the economy of West Sussex. It covers: GVA growth; GVA per head growth; employment change; and economic competitiveness.
GVA growth - GVA growth slows down after 2002.
GVA per head growth - Inflation-adjusted rate of growth in GVA per head comes to a standstill? GVA per head declines relative to the region and the UK; GVA data at sub-regional level ought to be treated with a degree of caution!
Employment change - A decline in workplace-based employment... …driven by a decline in business services employment? Employment data at sub-regional level is more reliable than GVA data but it still has to be treated with a degree of caution!
How competitive is the economy - Low and declining share of private sector employment along the coast … … leads to an increase in out-commuting to job opportunities elsewhere; Labour market data often says little about competitiveness of a local economy; A decline in business start-ups and business density in a number of coastal economies.
