Labour market update, March 2009
SEEDA Research and Economics have produced an update on the latest regional and sub-regional labour market figures released by the Office for National Statistics. There is a one page summary of the headline figures as well as a longer briefing.
The key points are:
- The South East saw by far the largest fall in employment of any region in the three months to January (down by 32,000). Many regions, including London and the East of England, recorded an increase in employment.
- Unemployment increased by 12,000 in the South East, which was one of the smallest increases of any region.
- While most regions saw a fall in the number of economically inactive people (those who are not working and not actively looking for work), the South East recorded the largest increase in economic inactivity of any region.
- The number of people claiming Job Seekers' Allowance has more than doubled in the past year, reaching 135,000 in February, which is the highest level since May 1997.
- Coastal and peripheral areas of the region have seen the fastest increase in the proportion of people claiming Job Seekers' Allowance.
