Private and state sector housing statistics
These two datasets contain information on private and state sector housing. Figures are available on dwelling size, condition and ownership as well as the number of properties let. There are also details of how many families are waiting for different types of homes.
It is important to note that not everyone on a waiting list is in urgent need of housing; it may be that social housing is one of several options being considered by a family. Similarly, the size of a waiting list should be considered as a useful indicator of housing demand, not an absolute measure.
The data are used by local authorities and policy makers to assist with the continued development of housing strategy and business planning.
The figures are available to local authority level for England, and now provide a time series from 2001 to 2008. The data are supplied by the Department for Communities and Local Government. The 2006/ 2007 datasets were produced before the publication of the UK Statistics Authority's new code of practice on 6th January 2009. At time of production these data were classed as Not National Statistics. The datasets from 2008 are classified as Other Official Statistics.
