RDA Business Survey - findings, last quarter 2008
The RDA Business Survey, undertaken in all 9 regions of England, has just reported its findings for the last quarter of 2008. In the South East, 680 businesses across the region were surveyed, and the headline results are presented in the attached executive summary.
Key findings include:
- Business confidence in the South East is continuing to decline, with the majority of businesses now expecting the business climate to get worse over the next 12 months.
- Almost two thirds of businesses say their level of output is currently below capacity.
- Over half of businesses expect profit margins to be lower over the next 12 months, with 40% expecting domestic orders to be lower. Expected levels of future investment have fallen sharply since June 2008.
- Most businesses expect the numbers employed to remain the same over the next 12 months, although a quarter of businesses anticipate a reduction in staff.
- One in five businesses have introduced a new product or process innovation in the past year.
- One in three businesses have taken steps to reduce CO2 emissions.
