South East Labour Market Update, August 2009
The August edition of SEEDA's Labour Market Update is available on the SEEDA Research & Economics web page.
The key headlines this month are:
- The number of people in employment or economically active continues to fall in the South East, though not by as much as neighbouring regions in the south of England.
- The rise in unemployment in the South East in the three months to June was one of the largest of any region. There are now more than a quarter of a million unemployed people in the South East.
- Claimant count unemployment continues to increase at a much slower pace than in the early months of the recession, and in several areas of the region the claimant count fell between June and July.
- The number of job vacancies is again lower than the same time a year ago, with the largest drop in available vacancies being in the business and financial services sectors.
