South East Labour Market Update, February 2009
Monthly update on the South East labour market from SEEDA's Research and Economics team. This update summarises the latest statistics for the region released by the Office for National Statistics.
The key headlines are:
- Employment in the South East fell by 15,000 in the three months to December, which represents one third of the total fall in employment in the UK (45,000). Several other regions saw increases in employment, including London (up 33,000).
- Female employment has continued to fall in the South East, with the number of women in work dropping by 14,000 in the three months to December.
- Unemployment in the region increased by 16,000 in the three months to December, reaching 218,000. Over the year from December 2007 to December 2008 the South East has seen the smallest increase in unemployment of any English region.
- In January 2009 there were 115,400 people in the South East claiming Job Seekers' Allowance. This is the highest level since February 1998, and has more than doubled in the past year.
- The fastest increases in the proportion of people claiming Job Seekers' Allowance over the past quarter have been in coastal areas (notably the Isle of Wight, Havant and Swale) as well as in Milton Keynes.
- There have been significant numbers of redundancy notifications in the manufacturing, construction and retail industries in recent weeks.
