Vacant dwellings and second homes, 2007 / 2008
Neighbourhoods with many empty homes may be subject to economic and social decline. This dataset on vacant dwellings can help to identify areas with low housing demand or an excess of second homes. It also provides important information on land use at a local level.
Local authorities are trying to bring long-term empty housing back into circulation. This makes best use of existing dwelling stock and helps to reduce development pressure on green belt land.
The figures are taken from local authority Council Tax records and are available to Lower Layer Super Output Area level for England. The data are provided by Communities and Local Government and are classed as Other Official Statistics.
